When the Stock Clutch Is No Longer Enough
The factory clutch on the Nissan 350Z and Infiniti G35 is adequate for a stock VQ35 engine driving normally. Add boost, increase power output significantly, start driving hard on track, or use the car for drifting and that stock clutch starts to show its limits quickly. Slip under hard acceleration, heat fade during repeated aggressive use, and eventually a clutch that simply cannot hold the torque the engine is producing are all signs that the drivetrain needs a proper upgrade.
At McClain Auto Part we supply performance drivetrain components to Nissan and Infiniti owners across the country. The Stage 4 clutch kit for the 350Z and G35 is one of our most requested performance parts on the VQ35 platform. Owners with turbocharged Z33s and G35s come to us when their clutch starts slipping under boost. Drift drivers come to us when they need a clutch that handles the heat and load cycles of sustained sideways driving. Track drivers come to us when they want a clutch that performs consistently lap after lap without fade.
A Stage 4 clutch is a serious upgrade. It is not the right choice for every application and we will address that honestly throughout this page. For the builds it is designed for it delivers the holding power, heat resistance, and durability that the factory clutch simply cannot provide.
What a Stage 4 Clutch Actually Is
Clutch stage ratings are a general industry classification for performance level rather than a strictly standardised specification. As a practical guide, Stage 4 represents a high-performance application with an aggressive friction material and a pressure plate that clamps significantly harder than OEM specification.
The friction disc in a Stage 4 kit typically uses a ceramic, carbon ceramic, or metallic friction material depending on the manufacturer. These materials handle heat better than organic OEM friction materials and maintain their grip characteristics under the temperatures generated by high-power or high-frequency use. The trade-off is that engagement feel is firmer and less forgiving than stock, particularly during slow-speed manoeuvring.
The pressure plate in a Stage 4 kit clamps harder against the friction disc. More clamping force means more torque-holding capacity. It also means heavier clutch pedal effort. For a daily-driven car that sees occasional spirited use, a Stage 4 clutch is more than necessary and the pedal effort will become tiring quickly. For a dedicated track car, a turbo build with significant power output, or a drift car where clutch abuse is part of normal operation, the Stage 4 rating is appropriate.

- Nissan 350Z, 2003 to 2009, manual transmission equipped models
- Infiniti G35, 2003 to 2007, manual transmission equipped models, coupe and sedan
VQ35DE vs VQ35HR Considerations
The 350Z and G35 used two variants of the VQ35 engine across the production run. The VQ35DE was used through 2005 in the 350Z and through 2006 in the G35. The VQ35HR replaced it from 2006 onward in the 350Z and from 2007 in the G35. The two engines share the same bellhousing pattern and transmission so clutch fitment is consistent across both variants. Confirm your specific year and model before ordering and we verify the correct kit for your application.
This kit is compatible with manual transmission models only. Automatic transmission equipped 350Z and G35 vehicles do not use a conventional clutch assembly.
Performance and Driving Benefits
For builds running boosted power the primary benefit of a Stage 4 clutch is straightforward. The higher clamping force and heat-resistant friction material hold the torque that the engine produces without slipping. A turbocharged VQ35 pushing 400 or 500 horsepower through a stock clutch will slip under hard acceleration. The Stage 4 kit eliminates that problem with a clutch rated for the power level.
For drift applications the heat resistance of the friction material is the most important characteristic. Repeated clutch engagement and disengagement at high RPM during sustained drifting generates significant heat in the clutch assembly. Organic OEM friction materials degrade quickly under those conditions. The ceramic or carbon ceramic material in a Stage 4 disc maintains its friction characteristics through heat cycles that would damage a stock clutch rapidly.
On track the benefit is consistency. A clutch that performs the same on lap 15 as it did on lap 1 is more valuable than one that feels great initially but fades as heat builds. The Stage 4 friction material and heavy-duty pressure plate maintain consistent engagement feel and holding power through sustained high-load driving.
The honest trade-off is pedal effort and street manners. Stage 4 clutches require noticeably more pedal effort than stock. Engagement is less progressive and more on-off in character, particularly at lower speeds. For a car used primarily on track or at drift events that trade-off is acceptable. For a daily driver it is worth considering whether a Stage 2 or Stage 3 kit better suits the actual use case.
Installation Notes
Professional installation is strongly recommended for any performance clutch replacement. The VQ35 transmission requires specific tools and procedures for removal and the clutch alignment process during installation directly affects how the finished clutch engages and how long it lasts.
Flywheel Consideration
The existing flywheel should be resurfaced or replaced when installing a new clutch. Fitting a new friction disc against a worn or heat-marked flywheel surface shortens the service life of the new disc and affects initial engagement quality. A lightweight aftermarket flywheel is a popular pairing with a Stage 4 clutch kit on the VQ35 platform for builds where weight reduction and throttle response are priorities.
Hydraulic System Inspection
Before installation have the clutch hydraulic system inspected. A worn master cylinder or slave cylinder that is functioning marginally will affect the performance of any new clutch. Addressing hydraulic system wear at the same time as the clutch replacement avoids having to revisit the installation shortly after.
Break-In Procedure
Every performance clutch requires a proper break-in period after installation. During the first 500 miles of use avoid high-load clutch engagement, sustained slipping during hill starts, and aggressive launches. Graduated engagement during break-in allows the friction material to bed correctly against the flywheel and pressure plate surfaces. After break-in the clutch performs as designed.

A 350Z owner who ordered from us said: “Running a turbocharged VQ35 at around 420 horsepower. Stock clutch was slipping badly. Ordered the Stage 4 kit from McClain, had a shop install it with a resurfaced flywheel. Pedal is heavier than stock but engagement is solid and no slip at all under boost. Exactly what the build needed.”
Frequently Asked Questions
Will This Fit My Nissan 350Z or Infiniti G35?
This kit fits manual transmission equipped 350Z models from 2003 to 2009 and G35 models from 2003 to 2007. Both VQ35DE and VQ35HR engine variants are compatible. Automatic transmission models do not use a conventional clutch. Contact us with your specific year and model before ordering and we confirm the correct fitment.
How Much Power Can This Clutch Handle?
The Stage 4 kit is rated for significantly more torque than the factory clutch. Depending on the specific kit configuration, holding capacity falls in the range of 500 to 550 lb-ft. For modified VQ35 builds running turbo or supercharger power this rating covers most street and track applications. Contact us for specific torque ratings on the exact kit we have available.
Is This Clutch Street Friendly?
With honest caveats, yes. The Stage 4 clutch works on the street but pedal effort is heavier than stock and engagement is more abrupt at low speeds. For a car used primarily for track, drift, or high-power street driving the trade-off is acceptable. For a primarily daily-driven vehicle a Stage 2 or Stage 3 kit may better balance performance and daily usability.
Does the Kit Include a Flywheel?
No. This kit includes the pressure plate, friction disc, and release bearing. The flywheel is not included. Resurfacing your existing flywheel or fitting an aftermarket flywheel at the same time as the clutch installation is strongly recommended.
Is Professional Installation Recommended?
Yes. The VQ35 transmission requires specific procedures for removal and the clutch alignment process during installation affects long-term performance. A qualified shop familiar with the 350Z or G35 platform will produce the best result.
What Break-In Procedure Should I Follow?
During the first 500 miles avoid hard launches, sustained clutch slipping, and aggressive engagement. Graduated engagement during break-in allows the friction material to bed correctly. After the break-in period the clutch performs to its full rated capacity.
