JDM Honda K20A 2.0L DOHC i-VTEC Engine – Acura RSX / Honda Civic Si (2002–2006)
The Honda K20A engine needs little introduction in the Honda community. It powered the DC5 Integra Type R and EP3 Civic Type R in the Japanese domestic market and earned a reputation for high-revving VTEC performance that has kept demand for clean units consistently strong for over two decades. For RSX and Civic Si owners in the United States, a JDM K20A engine represents a direct path to a fresher, higher-specification version of what is already in the chassis. The JDM K20A delivers a factory-engineered i-VTEC system in a package that drops into the same engine bay without the engineering overhead of a cross-platform swap.
The appeal of sourcing a Honda K20A 2.0L engine from Japan rather than pulling a used USDM unit comes down to mileage and specification. Japanese vehicle inspection requirements push low-mileage vehicles out of the market early, creating a supply of engines that have significantly fewer hours on them than comparable American examples. A K20A engine for sale from a verified JDM import source with documented mileage and compression test results is a meaningfully different purchase than a used domestic engine with an unknown service history.
At McClain Auto Part, we import K20A engines through established JDM sourcing channels and inspect every unit at our Cleveland, Ohio facility before listing. Compression results are documented and available before you purchase.

What Is Included
This imported JDM engine comes as a complete assembly including the following components as equipped on the donor vehicle:
Engine long block with head and block assembly
Intake manifold
Exhaust manifold
Ignition coils
Alternator
Power steering pump
The Acura RSX K20 engine package provides the core assembly needed for a direct replacement or swap build. Additional components including the ECU, wiring harness, and transmission are not included with the engine but are discussed in the fitment section below.
Engine Condition and Import Quality
Every JDM K20A engine we carry is sourced directly from Japan through established import channels. Mileage documentation accompanies the import and the typical mileage range on K20A units we handle runs between 60,000 and 90,000 miles. Japanese domestic market sourcing consistently produces engines in this range because of how Japan’s vehicle inspection system cycles vehicles out of service.
Mileage documentation provides the starting point but it is not the only thing we verify. Every K20A DOHC i-VTEC engine that comes through our Cleveland facility is compression tested across all four cylinders before listing. Actual compression readings are recorded and provided to buyers on request. This is a real compression test with documented numbers, not a visual pass.
Visual inspection on used Honda K20 engine units covers the external block surface, head condition, timing chain area, VTEC solenoid screen, valve cover interior, and oil passage condition at accessible points. The VTEC solenoid screen is a known maintenance item on K20A engines and we check its condition during inspection. Units with evidence of prior overheating or head gasket history are noted in the listing.
Low mileage and JDM sourcing together represent a genuine quality advantage for buyers who understand what they are getting. The combination of documented mileage, compression testing, and physical inspection is what separates a reliable import from an unknown gamble.
Fitment and Swap Information
The Civic Si K20A swap and RSX replacement application are both well-documented within the Honda community, but proper planning before the engine arrives is still essential for a clean result.
RSX Base Application
The 2002–2006 Acura RSX Base came from the factory with the K20A3, the USDM specification of the 2.0L K-series with a single-stage VTEC system. Swapping a JDM K20A into this chassis delivers the dual-stage i-VTEC system of the higher-specification engine in the same physical package. The swap is mechanically straightforward but requires addressing the ECU and wiring harness to match the JDM engine’s sensor configuration.
Civic Si Application
The 2002–2005 Honda Civic Si used the K20A3 in USDM configuration. The Civic Si K20A swap follows the same general approach as the RSX application. The factory K20A3 mounting points, transmission, and cooling system all carry over. The ECU and wiring harness are the primary adaptation points.
ECU and Wiring Considerations
JDM K20A engines use Japanese-market ECUs with immobilizer systems that will not allow the engine to start in a non-matching chassis without addressing the immobilizer. Options include sourcing a compatible USDM ECU, using an OBD1 conversion harness with a compatible ECU, or running standalone engine management. Planning this before the engine arrives keeps the project on schedule.
Transmission Pairing
The K20A3 five-speed from the RSX Base or Civic Si bolts directly to the JDM K20A. The RSX Type S six-speed is a popular upgrade pairing for K20A builds and is a direct bolt-on to the same engine. Confirming your transmission plan before ordering the engine is part of swap planning rather than something to figure out after the engine is on the stand.
Shipping and Local Support
Freight shipping is available nationwide. Engines ship palletized and secured for freight carrier delivery to your door or business address. Tracking is provided when the shipment leaves our Cleveland facility.
Local pickup is available at our Cleveland, Ohio warehouse for buyers who prefer to inspect the engine in person before taking delivery.
Local delivery is available in select areas around Cleveland. Contact us to confirm whether your location qualifies.
Before You Order
Confirm your exact chassis year and trim before ordering. The K20A fits both the RSX Base and Civic Si applications listed above but confirming your specific year prevents any variation in accessory mounting or sensor location from becoming a surprise during installation.
Request compression test results before committing. We provide actual cylinder readings on request and stand behind the numbers we document. Ask for photos of the block exterior, valve cover interior, and VTEC solenoid area if you want to evaluate condition visually before purchasing.
Know your ECU and harness plan before the engine arrives. This is the part of a K20A swap that most commonly delays projects when it is not planned in advance.
Contact our team in Cleveland with your chassis year, trim, and swap configuration. We answer fitment and swap questions before anything ships.
