The Hellcat Engine Platform

Dodge introduced the 6.2L Supercharged HEMI V8 for the 2015 model year in the Challenger SRT Hellcat and Charger SRT Hellcat, producing 707 horsepower from the factory. That output figure redefined what an American production sedan and muscle car could deliver from the factory floor and established the Hellcat as one of the most significant performance platforms of the modern era.

The platform changed a lot over the ten years. The Redeye version came out in 2019 with 797 horsepower. Then the Super Stock version came out with 807 horsepower. The Ram 1500 TRX got the supercharged 6.2L engine in 2021 with 702 horsepower. It was made for, off-road use. Each Redeye and Super Stock and Ram 1500 TRX version has the basic 6.2L supercharged engine.. They have different settings and supercharger sizes and other parts that are different. This means that if you want to replace or swap parts it can be a problem because of these differences. The Ram 1500 TRX and the Redeye and Super Stock all have the 6.2L supercharged engine. They are not exactly the same.

The engineering behind the Hellcat HEMI centers on a positive displacement IHI supercharger producing approximately 11.6 pounds of boost on the standard Hellcat and approximately 14.5 pounds on the Redeye. The block is cast iron for structural integrity under sustained high-output use. Aluminum heads contribute to weight management while maintaining the thermal performance required for forced induction operation. The combination of factory-forged internals in the Redeye and Super Stock variants and strong cast internals in the standard Hellcat gives this platform plenty of strength. With the right supporting modifications, enthusiasts and builders have found that these engines can handle significant power beyond the factory output.

Vehicle Compatibility and Variant Differences

The 6.2L Supercharged HEMI appeared across several distinct Dodge, Chrysler, and Ram applications between 2015 and the end of production. Understanding the differences between variants is essential before ordering a replacement or swap engine.

Standard Hellcat (707 hp)

The standard Hellcat configuration appeared in the Challenger SRT Hellcat from 2015 through 2023 and the Charger SRT Hellcat across the same production window. This variant uses a smaller supercharger pulley ratio producing approximately 11.6 psi of boost and carries cast aluminum pistons. It is the most commonly available used Hellcat engine in the market given the production volume across this nine-year window.

Redeye (797 hp)

The Redeye configuration arrived for the 2019 model year in the Challenger SRT Hellcat Redeye and Charger SRT Hellcat Redeye. Key differences from the standard Hellcat include a larger supercharger inlet, revised pulley ratio producing approximately 14.5 psi of boost, forged aluminum pistons, and additional fuel system hardware. The Redeye engine is not a direct bolt-in replacement for a standard Hellcat application without supporting modifications to the fuel system and engine management calibration.

Super Stock (807 hp)

The Challenger SRT Super Stock arrived for 2020 with the highest factory output of any Hellcat variant at 807 horsepower. The Super Stock engine carries the Redeye supercharger with additional calibration changes. Replacement applications for this specific variant require matching the complete engine management system rather than the engine block alone.

Ram 1500 TRX (702 hp)

The Ram 1500 TRX brought the 6.2L supercharged HEMI to the truck segment for 2021 through 2024. The TRX engine carries truck-specific calibration, accessory drive configurations, and mounting provisions that differ from the car-based applications. Cross-platform swap applications between TRX and car-based Hellcat configurations require significant engineering consideration.

VIN Verification

Provide your VIN before ordering any Hellcat engine from McClain Auto Part. Your VIN confirms the specific variant your vehicle was built with, the transmission it was paired with, and the engine management configuration it requires. Inspection Process

Every Hellcat engine at McClain Auto Part goes through a documented inspection process at our Cleveland, Ohio facility before it ships. Here is exactly what our team checks.

Compression Test

We perform a compression test on every cylinder before listing any Hellcat engine. Actual pressure readings are recorded for all eight cylinders. We do not perform a visual pass and call it tested. If compression variance exceeds acceptable limits on any cylinder, the engine does not ship.

Leak Inspection

The block, heads, and gasket surfaces are inspected for external oil leaks, coolant leaks, and seepage at all sealing surfaces. The valve cover gaskets, front main seal, and rear main seal areas are checked specifically.

Oil Inspection

The oil is drained and inspected for coolant contamination, metal particulate, and condition. A milky appearance indicating coolant intrusion or the presence of metal shavings immediately disqualifies an engine from our inventory.

Coolant Inspection

Coolant passages are inspected for oil contamination and blockage. The thermostat housing and water pump surfaces are checked for seepage and corrosion.

Supercharger Inspection

The supercharger housing is inspected for cracks, snout damage, and pulley condition. The bypass valve operation is checked. The supercharger inlet port is inspected for debris ingestion evidence.

Visual Inspection

The full external surface of the block, heads, and supercharger are inspected for impact damage, cracks, stripped threads, and missing hardware.

Donor Vehicle Documentation

Mileage is verified from donor vehicle records. We do not accept seller mileage claims without documentation. Most of our Hellcat engines come from vehicles with under 80,000 miles.

Shipping Preparation

After passing inspection, the engine is drained of fluids, all open ports are plugged to prevent contamination, and the assembly is mounted on a certified engine stand or pallet. The unit is strapped, wrapped, and prepared for freight carrier handoff.

Installation Notes

Cooling System

The 6.2L Hellcat runs a dual heat exchanger cooling system for the supercharger intercooler in addition to the primary engine cooling circuit. A direct replacement installation requires matching the intercooler heat exchanger configuration from the donor vehicle or upgrading to an aftermarket heat exchanger system before the replacement engine operates correctly under load.

ECU and PCM

The Hellcat engine management system is VIN-locked to the original vehicle’s PCM. A direct replacement installation consequently requires either a PCM flash to match the replacement engine or sourcing a matched PCM from the same donor vehicle. For swap applications, a standalone engine management system is the most common solution.

Fuel System

The standard Hellcat requires high-flow fuel system components including the factory dual fuel pump module or equivalent aftermarket fuel delivery. The Redeye variant requires additional fuel system capacity beyond the standard Hellcat configuration. Confirm your fuel system matches the specific variant before installation.

Transmission Compatibility

The Hellcat was paired with either a Tremec TR-6060 six-speed manual or a TorqueFlite 8HP90 eight-speed automatic depending on the model year and trim. The engine’s flexplate or flywheel must match the transmission being used. Confirm your transmission configuration before ordering.

Sensors

All engine sensors should be transferred from the donor engine or sourced new before installation. Crankshaft position sensor, camshaft position sensors, oil pressure sensor, coolant temperature sensor, and knock sensors all affect engine management function.

Recommended Pre-Installation Service

Replace the oil and filter with fresh fluid before startup. Inspect and replace the serpentine belt and supercharger belt if the donor vehicle mileage warrants it. Prime the oil system before initial startup to protect the bearings during the first run.

Hellcat Engine Swap Guide

The Hellcat platform has become one of the most popular swap engines in American performance building. The combination of factory-engineered 700-plus horsepower, broad aftermarket support, and increasing used engine availability makes it a compelling swap candidate for a wide range of platforms.

Common Swap Applications

Classic Dodge and Plymouth muscle cars including the A-body, B-body, and E-body platforms are the most common Hellcat swap recipients. The Gen III HEMI block dimensions are broadly compatible with older Mopar engine bay dimensions with appropriate motor mount fabrication. Ford and GM platform swaps are less common but documented in the enthusiast community with significant fabrication requirements.

Fuel Requirements

The Hellcat requires premium fuel at a minimum of 91 octane for proper operation. High-output calibrations benefit from 93 octane or higher. Swap builders targeting power levels above the factory output should plan fuel system capacity around E85 compatibility or race fuel blending.

Cooling

A purpose-built cooling system for a Hellcat swap must account for both the primary engine cooling circuit and the supercharger intercooler heat exchanger circuit. The heat exchanger requires its own coolant reservoir, pump, and cooling capacity separate from the primary radiator circuit.

Wiring

A standalone engine management system is the most practical solution for swap applications. Several aftermarket ECU manufacturers produce plug-and-play harness solutions specifically for the Gen III HEMI platform. Factory PCM reuse in a swap application requires significant wiring work and anti-theft system bypassing.

Transmission

The TorqueFlite 8HP90 automatic is the most commonly used transmission in Hellcat swap builds due to its strength, overdrive ratios, and aftermarket controller availability. The Tremec TR-6060 manual is used in applications where a manual gearbox is specifically required.

Motor Mounts

Custom motor mount fabrication is required for any non-Mopar swap application. Several aftermarket manufacturers produce bolt-in motor mount kits for common swap platforms. Confirm clearance for the supercharger height before committing to an engine bay configuration.

Professional Recommendation

Hellcat swap projects involve significant engineering complexity across the fuel, cooling, wiring, and drivetrain systems. We recommend professional installation for swap applications to ensure all systems are properly integrated before the engine operates under load.
